Pendrin
Characterized by a cytoplasmic STAS domain at the C-terminus which is preceded by 12 membrane helices. Pendrin protein localizes to the membranes of epithelial cells in tissues throughout the body and functions primarily in anion transport across the membrane of the cell, particularly iodide, chloride, and bicarbonate anions. While the function of Pendrin as an anion transporter is relatively well defined, little is known about the molecular change in protein function that occurs in individuals with mutant forms of Pendrin, such as in Pendred syndrome.
